It's all about the taste and if you like the taste of it then buy it. Me personally I don't like the taste of it therefore I don't buy it. There is definitely a difference in the taste whether it's air and nitrogen or not.

As for weighing, they already weigh it as they go along - they have to label each package. They have the option of taking off that extra dollars worth of consumer waste before printing the label. But they dont because its a marketing ploy to get more money per customer.

Normally they weigh it after it has already been wrapped and the scales take off a certain amount of ounces for the tray, plastic wrap and label. If a customer requests a 1 pound package then they will grind out what they think is a pound and go to the scale without wrapping it and see if it is one pound, if it is not then they will go back and try to get it as close to one pound as possible. It's not like Food City is trying to intentionally rob customers of money, it is just hard for a human to grind out an exact amount such as one pound, 1.5 pounds, etc.

I don't agree, that grocery stores add 'extra' meat to the hamburger packages to gain more 'dollars' at the register. They grind hamburger into different size trays. 1#, 2# and 3#. They use a foot switch to cut the grinder on and off when they think the package holds the right amount.
The additives that are put into the meat to give it longer shelf life is WRONG... all it does is keep the beef red. It doesn't change the aging process.
If you want a really good burger or if you are adding the meat to a casserole or whatever you are cooking, the best thing you can do is find a cut of chuck or round on sale and have the meat department where you shop grind that for you. I'm sure you will agree the taste will be many times different than the nitrogen burger.

Straight up butcher chops are the best, but FC and walmart have all but killed them.

FC meat > Walmart by far. ELP just buy less than a pound, then you can save your money. Or they ahve that nasty pre rolled valu time ground beef that is weighed out. Either way, it's definitely not a ploy by Steve Smith to get more money from you. He actually loses money by getting it done the way it is. Well, not so much loses money but doesn't maximize his profits like he could.

Whole Foods is the best grocery store around, if ya ever see one check it out. They shoulda named it Whole Paycheck, but it's the Cadillac of grocery stores.

And if it works - then so be it. The meat stays red and doesn't brown so fast. That's all it does is protect the color.

How is it a waste? Just because a recipe calls for 1 lb. of ground meat doesn't mean you can't add 1.25 lbs. or 1.13 lbs.

When I know I'm not going to eat it, or if portions are being measured, the excess is just going to get trashed (and its mostly because I measure my portions)

I agree about buying meat at food city, I also like where they buy produce from local farms. I hate payless esp. in coeburn because when you go in there you see all of the "genetic anomalies" that coeburn has to offer......
